A Brief Potty Training Guide
If you are looking for a short potty training guide, read on. Here we will cover the most important aspects of infant potty training. Actually, the more applicable term would be toddler potty training, as infants are simply too young to train. The child has to be physically ready to be potty trained, one way to gauge this is by seeing how long they stay dry. They should be staying dry for at least two hours at a time before you attempt to introduce potty training.
Once they have reached this milestone, get their feelings about potty training. You may want to simply ask them if they are ready to use the potty rather than diapers or training pants. If your child shows interest, let them choose their own potty chair and their own underwear for when they 'graduate' from training. Even once they have gone to underwear, some parents use training pants at night just in case for awhile. This helps you avoid messy nighttime accidents, as some potty trained children can't hold it overnight for some time. You will notice when they wake up with dry training pants for a sustained period, which is when they can wear underwear all night.
It helps to establish a potty schedule. Observe your child and take note of when the wet or soil their diaper or training pants. Get an average idea of the times, then lead your child to their potty at these times. If they need encouragement to stay seated, give them a beloved book. Motivational charts, a potty training DVD, potty training books and other aids can also help the process along. It all depends on the temperament and personality of your child.
Some experts recommend allowing your child to run around unclothed during certain periods of time. This gives them the sensation of not wearing a diaper or training pants, and they are more likely to use the potty rather than urinate or defecate on themselves and the floor. Some kids will beg you to put a diaper or training pants on them, and if they do it is possible they are not ready for training. One thing to note is on average boys train later than girls. If you are concerned that your child is not responding to potty training and are past the age guidelines, speak to their pediatrician for advice.
