Potty Training Toddler Age Children
If you are potty training toddler age children or a toddler age child, there are some helpful tips that can help. The toddler age is roughly defined between 18 and 36 months of age, which is also the average age for potty training. If you ask around to moms and dads you may find that boys are reported as harder to train than girls, who may train on the early side of the spectrum. Why this is the case is not completely known. The most important thing is to make sure your child is ready, regardless of their age.
Some children will actually go a bit over the 36 month age. The worst thing you can do is try and force your child to potty train, which may have the opposite of the desired effect by pushing them further away from the potty. If you want to broach the subject with your toddler, mention it in casual conversation. Allow boys to observe brothers and dads, and girls to observe older sisters and moms using the potty. Your child may also benefit from a potty training DVD. There are also potty training DVD titles for parents as well that offer helpful tips. Some toddlers may even enjoy a demonstrative potty training doll.
When you go shopping with your toddler, let them choose their own potty chair so they have a personal connection to it. Ask your toddler if they would prefer a potty seat that fits on the big toilet. This is easier for parents to clean as all you do is flush. Some children do well with these, others prefer the floor potty chair. When picking the potty you may also want to let your children choose underwear to wear when they are successfully potty trained, which can be a good motivator.
Potty training toddler age children doesn't have to be a stressful experience for parents or children. The best way to prevent stress, as mentioned before, is not to pressure or force your child to potty train before they are ready. Once they are ready, implementing a potty schedule when you place them on the potty (perhaps with a favorite book) can help them develop a routine over time, they will get into the habit of going to the potty every few hours or as needed.
